FabLab BiH collaborated with innovator Katarina Ponjavić on a pioneering project focused on developing a prototype for a medical infectious waste disposal device. The project combined advanced digital fabrication with intellectual property consulting, supporting both the technical realization and legal protection of the innovation. The result was a fully functional working prototype, fabricated at FabLab using in-house expertise and equipment. In parallel, FabLab provided IP consulting and facilitation for securing international patent protection through WIPO, culminating in 30 registered patents protecting different aspects of the device.
This project demonstrates the potential of maker labs as incubators for high-impact innovations, particularly those addressing public health and sustainability challenges, and exemplifies successful integration of technical prototyping with strategic IP services.
